Following the success of last year’s sponsorship – where our funding provided new crafting tables for the children’s creative workshops – we’re proud to support something even bigger this summer: the Family Activity Day for the Summer Reading Challenge at Deepings Community Library.
What is the Summer Reading Challenge?
First launched in 1999, the Summer Reading Challenge is the UK’s biggest annual reading initiative for children. It encourages 4–11-year-olds to keep reading books throughout the school summer holidays – a crucial time when reading levels can otherwise drop. With fun incentives, activities, and themed events, the challenge now attracts approximately 700,000 children nationwide every year.
Locally, the Deepings Community Library Summer Reading Challenge kicked off on 5th July, and has already welcomed over 190 children – with more expected to join once schools officially break up for summer. The challenge has been funded by the Tesco Blue Token Scheme and is open to children from Market Deeping, Deeping St James, Deeping St Nicholas, West Deeping, Deeping Gate, and surrounding areas.

What’s happening this summer?
The Summer Reading Challenge is in full swing, and Deepings Community Library has planned a summer packed with story-filled fun and family-friendly activities. One particularly exciting feature is their new outdoor story garden, set up near the junior section of the library. Here, children can read in the sunshine and enjoy storytime events (weather permitting, of course!).
“This year’s Summer Reading Challenge has started with such a bang! We’ve already signed up over 190 children, and we’re hoping for many more once the schools finish,” shared Tui Girdlestone, Manager at Deepings Community Library. “Thanks to MoreStore’s generous sponsorship, we’re also able to enhance our big Family Activity Day on Saturday 30th August. It’s shaping up to be a fantastic celebration for our local families.”
Save the date: Saturday 30th August
The Family Activity Day will be a summer highlight. Headlining the event is the Barmpot Theatre’s whimsical puppet show ‘To The Moon And Back’ – a 10-minute mini performance about a barn owl and her family, all packed into a charming suitcase-sized set. It’s ideal for young children and families.
Alongside this theatrical treat, the library has partnered with South Kesteven District Council (SKDC) to offer hands-on nature-themed activities under the ‘Nature Makers’ programme. It’s all part of a community effort to make summer reading fun, interactive, and deeply rooted in creativity and learning.
